Many of us have embarked upon that annual ritual of false piety and self-delusion known as making New Year’s resolutions. Yeah, sure, we pledge to lose weight, exercise more, eat healthier, save more money, reduce stress, be nicer, yada, yada.
While others wallow in sanctimony to better their lives, I prefer to wield it as a weapon to enlighten and entertain. Forthwith are my slightly apocryphal resolutions made on behalf of certain notables regarding the energy industry in 2009:
1. I will avoid making rash predictions about oil prices.
“Oil prices are increasingly likely to hit between $150 and $200 a barrel over the next 6 to 24 months.”

The Wall Street titan of investment banking is now a traditional bank holding company and knocking at Warren Buffet’s door for a cash infusion.
2. I will be circumspect in promoting magic-bullet solutions for America’s energy problems.
“Building new wind generation facilities and better utilizing our natural gas resources can replace more than one-third of our foreign oil imports in 10 years.”

After issuing his challenge to Americans to dot the country’s heartland with wind turbines at a cost of $1.2 trillion, substitute gas-fired electricity with that wind power, and divert the domestic gas hitherto burned in those power plants to natural gas-fueled vehicles as a means to end the US “addiction” to foreign oil, T. Boone Pickens’ energy hedge fund lost $1 billion, about a third of which was his own money. Pickens then predicted oil prices would end the year at around $125 per barrel (see Resolution No. 1). And his own flagship project, a $10 billion wind farm in Texas, is on hold because natural gas prices have halved.
3. I will think long and hard when hedging my bets with my money.
“We believe we must invest the necessary capital to more fully capture the upside of our new opportunities. We remain focused on per-share value creation and we believe our shareholders will benefit from our increased investments in these new discoveries and projects and in our most important existing plays.”

The Chesapeake CEO subsequently sold almost all of his own stock in the company to cope with a personal margin call; the stock had been valued at $2.2 billion when he bought the shares on margin. Chesapeake also slashed its drilling budget (focused mainly on shale gas plays) by $10 billion in 2009-10. And McClendon was the driving force behind CNG Now, an initiative that complemented the Pickens plan on vehicular natural gas (see Resolution No. 2).
4. I will think even longer and harder when hedging my bets with company money.
Tom Kivisto, SemGroup LP
According to statements in the Chapter 11 bankruptcy of SemGroup LP, co-founder and former Pres. Tom Kivisto used money loaned to him by SemGroup to make personal trades on oil futures markets. SemGroup bet oil prices would drop when they more than doubled in the first half of 2008 (see Resolution No. 1). The margin calls amounted to more than $2 billion, including $290 million from Kivisto. He was subsequently sacked. The company is still struggling to reorganize and may have a buyer but remains under federal investigation.
5. I will walk the talk, i.e., not be a flaming hypocrite.

According to the Tennessee Center for Policy Research, since the release of his Oscar-winning documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, energy consumption at Al Gore’s Tennessee mansion increased from an average of 16,200 kW-hr per month in 2005 to 18,400 kW-hr per month in 2006. That’s 20 times as much electricity consumed in a month as the average American household uses in a year. And not a windmill in sight. At the same time, Gore’s mansion burned more than $1,000 of natural gas per month.
6. I will not put all my eggs in one basket. Nor eliminate on your leg and tell you it’s raining.
“Today I challenge our nation to commit to producing 100 percent of our electricity from renewable energy and truly clean carbon-free sources within 10 years. This goal is achievable, affordable, and transformative.”

Even ClimateProgress.org says a more realistic, but still ambitious, goal would be 50% renewable electricity sources by 2020. The US Energy Information Administration, however, projects that renewable power will have a US market share of 12-13% in 2030. Today renewables account for 9-8% of US power, and two-thirds of that is conventional hydropower—not solar or wind. Also see Resolution No. 2.
7. I will not, repeat, NOT regurgitate that lame, beating-a-dead-horse-after-it’s-already-glue metaphor of a “Manhattan Project” or “Apollo Project” to describe solutions to America’s energy challenges.

Kennedy challenged our nation to land a man on the moon and bring him back safely in 10 years, many people doubted we could accomplish that goal. But 8 years and 2 months later, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the surface of the moon.”

Gore’s July 17, 2008, speech in Washington, DC, that called for an Apollo Program-style government initiative to convert all US power to renewables within a decade:
“Many scientists and engineers have looked to the Apollo program as a metaphor, but stressed that the energy transformation is a far greater challenge. Here’s what one solar expert told me when I interviewed him for a climate story in AARP Magazine: ‘We already have electricity coming out of everybody’s wall socket,’ says Nathan S. Lewis, 51, a chemistry professor who codirects the Powering the Planet project at Caltech. ‘This is not a new function we’re seeking. It’s a substitution. It’s not like NASA sending a man to the moon. It’s like finding a new way to send a man to the moon when Southwest Airlines is already flying there every hour handing out peanuts.’”
8. On a personal note, I will try not to pick on Al Gore so much in 2009.

To paraphrase a line from My Fair Lady, why can’t main stream journalists be more like oil and gas journalists ? Maybe what the world needs is a baloon prickers brigade to stop some of the hubris a-borning, or at least before it gets to the Nobel Prize stage. (Would you consider the Chaimanship ?)
My comments on your New Year’s resolutions:
1. Ever notice that some of the people who were predicting $200/barrel are now predicting $25/barrel ? Is that what is meant by staying ahead of the curve ? Isn’t it a comfort to have all those ex-Goldman sachs guys in the new administration !
2. There are 105 million homes in the U. S. that currently use natural gas. Want to reduce dependence on foreign oil ? Put a tax credit on a conversion kit, tank and small home compressor. (Boone, you will just have to figure some other way to get the right-of-way to pipe your North Texas water to Dallas.)
3. It is just so difficult when the financiers don’t have your vision and won’t give you all of the funds you want to do all of the things you want to do. (Would a carbon cap slow McClendon’e retoric ?)
4. Did anyone notice that crude prices started down the same week that SemGroup went belly up ? The old NYMEX play is a zero sum game, boys. If you don’t have shorts to squeeze, the price ain’t going anywhere. The wonderful part about squeezing shorts is the fact that they can’t deliver the crude to you and must always buy their way out (or do speculative short sellers think there is pipe line space just waiting to accomodate deliveries against the NYMEX contract ?)
5. What you perhaps do not understand about Al Gore and his fellow traveling eletists is that they subscribe to the old Soviet idea that everyone is equal, but some are more equal than others. Or perhaps Al has some queen-ant genes in his DNA that leads him to believe he is on a higher plane than the rest of us drones.
6. A couple of days ago our local TV weatherman showed his viewing audience average Oklahoma winter temperatures beginning in 1998. With the exception of one year, there has been a continuing successive decline in temperature every year since 1998. Will Al soon began to talk about the coming ice age ?
7. I love Lewis’ NASA analogy. I don’t think it can be said any better than this.

I bought this book from Amazon in early January ‘08 to help me kick off the New Year. It’s mid-February, I’m now on Day 19 of the cleanse, and have lost 21 pounds. My energy level is returning to what it was years ago. I have used Peter’s book in conjunction with his CD “The Lemonade Diet” and would recommend both; it was nice listening to the CD while driving or at work on the computer. The CD is a compliment to the book, but it is not the same as the book which is why I got both of them. The book is a fairly comprehensive look at what is involved in “doing” this particular body cleanse - how toxins effect our bodies, detox symptoms, body reactions, mental-emotional-spiritual outcomes and more are all discussed. If you have ever considered a body cleanse this may just be the one for you! Give it a try. What have you got to lose? Turns out I had at least 21 pounds (and counting) to get rid of. As the title of the book says… you will lose weight, have more energy, and be happier in 10 days. Highly recommended.

Your post is a good method to lose weight for sure. A caring person should offer support to the other. Also, it is better to have a partner with a simlar weight loss goal a person to motivate you in anything to do. Motivating one another is better and if you got a partner you are much less likely to let that person down.

My sister plays Club Penguin,Neopets… She told me that each account posted around the web has been banned or frozen. Why do they do that? ‘Cos they hate that web page or what?

I smoked cigarettes for quite a long time. I understand it injures my health therefore I must stop smoking and yet this has been literally impossible. None of the stop smoking gadgets did any good. Then I stumbled upon the electronic cigarettes. It has practically changed my life. No longer breathing in toxic chemicals feels awesome!

Just about all that is on my mind is cigarette smoking. I do not need to smoke and if somebody offered me one today, I will decline. I feel I’m in a pretty terrible mood and have been having trouble falling asleep but yet I’m sure I have got to turn out to be tough. The e-cig may help me out in the long run.

I have not had a puff in over a year. The most severe aspect related to quitting might be the 1st 1 to 2 weeks. Happily this part didn’t last long and things got easier daily because of the e-cigs. Never surrender. Just simply keep trying and you should certainly be smoke-free once and for all.

Last week I was shooting my 280 Rem. at the range. Just wanted to use up some factory loads so I could use the cases to reload. I had my chronograph with me, and just for the heck of it, I decided to put some of the factory loads through to see what kinds of velocity they delivered. I never bothered doing this with factory loads in the past. I was shooting 140 grain Remington Core-Lokt bullets, nothing fancy. I shot the first bullet through the chrony, and couldn’t believe my eyes when I read the velocity, but there it was - 2902! My handloads are usually NOT hot. I usually get about 2800 f/s, but I never expected that kind of speed with factory loads out of my 22 inch barrel with this caliber. After firing 10 rounds of these factory laods, the average speed was 2894 f/s. Anyway, thought you might be interested to see what this cxaliber can do… even with factory loads. What a sweet rifle and caliber!

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

I m just finishing my 2nd tub of Cyclone. Been working out for 5 years and was toned and lean. I can really see the differences after using cyclone, I generally bigger, still toned and stronger. Gym sessions much more productive. Results have been quick too.Was only going to use for 2 months, but so impressed I am going to keep going and see how much bigger I can get. Chocolate tastes fine, and it is pricey but I can see the results!
