Be Tall
What does being tall have to do with being successful in the workplace? According to some studies, it has a lot to do with it. Think about what looks are commercially valued in American culture—tall, attractive model types. Much has been written about the correlation between height and success, but for those of us without the gift of height, we do not have to be doomed to working in the dungeons. There are certain behaviors that tall, successful people exhibit which can be mimicked by anyone in order to reap the benefits.
Be noticeable. Tall people bring with them a physical presence everywhere they go. They get noticed more often because of this presence. When they speak, people are more likely to remember what they say. This attention certainly helps an already talented performer when it comes to raises and promotions. To create a presence without the advantage of good genes, find a signature move of your own. Consciously plan your entrance into a meeting. Walk in the room with your power suit on, use humor to hook them, or give everyone your personal attention.
Act like a leader. Tall people…we literally have to look up to them. It follows that we naturally default tall people as leaders. Even in their youth, other people give them the physical space and attention that is usually bestowed upon a leader. Even though tall people may have practice on their side, you too can act like a leader. Let your intellect, creative thinking and hard work step into work as your height.
Place yourself in a power position. Body language is very important in the game of power. Being able to look down at someone signals an imbalance of power. Whenever possible you want this imbalance to be in your favor. Unlike a tall person, a shorter person has to artificially create the setting. For example, stand when possible while a coworker is sitting.
Oversize your personality. People expect a bigger personality out of a tall person so tall people are more able to talk loud and be boisterous. You can create the same oversized personality as your tall counterparts. Monitor the personalities of tall people around you and try to integrate certain characteristics into your own actions.
Focus on perception rather than performance. Being tall is not a pre-requisite for being a better performer. However, there is still a perception that tall people perform better. So although performance is important, perception is just as important. Don’t sit back and wait for your performance to speak for itself. Be sure your hard work gets noticed!!

I agree that tall people seem to get the best jobs and end up in management. I have also noticed, however, that they are typically the biggest in other things as well. As you said, boisterous to the point of profane & obnoxious, and they get away with it. I suppose the next article will be be on thin-ness or physically fit vs. fat. The svelt types also are known for their narcissim. Thanks but I’ll just stick to being the short round type with a good sense of humor. If being a jerk is what qualifies you to be a manager, I’ll stick to being the grunt.

I wouldn’t take this all so literally - be “tall” in your confidence, be a leader, act the part and the rest will follow (or push) you to bigger roles or greater responsibilities is what I think she’s saying.

Hello All.
Some of you have the misconception that being tall has privliges over short. I find this observation a bit oversighted . I am very Tall and to my disadvantage the shorter males have the sense of being intimidated which I try to avoid. Sometimes it becomes quite irritating and I spout off . Now being Tall has has the advantange of more lung capacity making myself heard a bit better and somewhat louder than the norm. I also have found that being larger than the average male has the disadvantage of having to lift more.carry more,do more than the average male the some age or a bit younger doing the same task . We Tall people have the same feeling and emotions as the next guy. I do have a can do attitude but it comes with limitations . The next time you see a Tall guy working his butt off its because a shorter guy or lady has most likely asked him to do a job for four give him a hand hell appreciate it and thank you with a kind voice and a higher pat on the back…. By the way thanks for the blog it has been most helpful.
