Thinking About Your Future

As business picks back up and companies begin to gain confidence, we will begin to see a bigger divide between companies who invest in their talent and those whom do not.  The pro-talent companies are characterized by a strong interest to get their compensation programs back on track after a year of lay-offs and salary freezes.   And if they truly cannot afford an aggressive stance, then they have a clear communication about how they plan to retain talent.   These companies realize that without talent the company does not thrive.

On the other hand, companies more driven by cost savings measures as a path to bottom line growth will be less inclined to lift salary freezes or re-instate promotions and other benefits.

Over the next year two critical things will happen:
1. Employees will have the opportunity to evaluate their company’s stance on talent.
2. Companies will begin to hire again, making it an employee’s market.

When the economy tanked it provided all employees with an opportunity—to see our companies true colors in terms of embracing or abandoning its workforce.   If “endure” is the message your company is sending, and there is no communication as to when the drought may end, then it is time to start fending for yourself.   Dust off the resume and be ready to embrace new opportunities with a company that reciprocates support. Let this time be a wake-up call for your career.
