Tackling Someday Head On

We only have one life to live, so we should all look at everyday as a “now or never” endeavor.  If there is something that has been lurking in your mind–something you have wanted to tackle, accomplish, learn, etc.–quit putting it off and start focusing on your true wants and needs.

There are so many reasons and fears that can get in the way of us accomplishing our true potential.  You lack confidence…you lack the education…you lack the money…..you’re afraid of failing…..the excuses can pile up.

I know, I know, easier said than done.  But is that the truth? Well, maybe not.  Maybe those things that we long for more than anything else in the world we do find the time to commit to.  And maybe, if we dug deep down, the things that we think we want to accomplish are things we think we should accomplish, but are not fully committed to.  So before beating yourself up about not achieving your goals, take a hard look at what they are your goals and be honest about whether or not these truly are your goals.

A true dream is something we think about constantly—we think, eat and breathe it.  A chore, on the other hand, we put off.  Sometimes our “goals” turn out to be chores, but our minds are not ready to consciously make that distinction.   Let’s take an obvious example…child-rearing.  The majority of people have a dream of child-rearing.  No one tells us we have to have a child.  We choose that as one of our dreams.  And as time continues, that goal becomes greater and greater.  And no matter what the obstacles, people find a way to bring children into their lives.

After taking that hard look to divide the so-called goals (chores) from the real goals, the next thing you may have to do is prioritize those goals.  If you have competing goals without any direction of which to focus on first, you can become overwhelmed, which in turn becomes a hindrance to your success.

Finally, are you choosing safe over happy?  Your excuses allow you to live in the environment that has been created thus far, and is therefore “safe”.  Reaching goals outside of that space can be scary, but they can also be extremely satisfying.  You must be willing to expose yourself, be willing to fail and risk your comfort if you truly want to fulfill a dream.

Only you are the one that can determine if the end is worth the means.

I can really relate to your article. My issue has been time. What with trying to build up my professional credentials through work, training, networking, etc, and making time for my family. My dream is to be a best selling author. Looking it at it as a now or never proposition is a good idea as it should motivate me to make some time in my schedule at least until it becomes a consuming passion.
    Thanks
