The Value of Resilience

Every career minded individual should have a piece of their attention focused on creating their own value at all times.   Making yourself a valuable talent asset is the key to a successful career.  If you are a consistent reader of my blogs, by now you have picked up on this theme.  I cannot stress the point of value enough.  Creating your own value takes time, thought and fortitude, but it pays off in the end.

There are numerous factors and characteristics that you can embrace in your quest for value; one is resilience.
The definition of resilience includes the capability of bouncing back from or adjusting to challenges and change.  No one is invincible to failure and everyone endures change at one time or another. It’s just part of life.

The important thing is how you handle yourself during those difficult times. Companies identify value in their talent during challenging times.  Anyone can be great during the good times, but the real talent is separated from the rest by being resilient.

To be resilient…

Focus on results.  It is easy to get lost in the crushing effects of a challenge while enduring it.  Although easier said than done, it is important to embrace the experience for what it is—a singular event in time—and realize that results are the outcome.  Stay committed to seeing the issue through to the end.

View every failure as a lesson.  It is hard to admit failure.  Very hard.  Our mistakes might even get us into hot water at times.  But there is no denying that mistakes can bring about valuable lessons.  Failing also provides you the opportunity to practice your resilience.  Don’t be ashamed or afraid of failing.  You bring less value to the table by playing it safe because you are less likely to grow your experiences and develop.  And….your management will not get the chance to see how resilient you can be.

Resilience is one of the characteristics of a great leader so practice your resilience every chance you get.

Dear Stanna, I certainly agree that a professional should have resilience to bounce back so as to enhance his/her professional value. But i think this quality or attitude stems from internal organic chemistry developed through knoweldge and skills in a corporate enviornment which attaches importance to HR development for excellence. It can not work in isolation on its own.
